Why Joe Delfgauw Started Online Lead Exchange

by Joe Delfgauw

In 2017, I had six physical call centers in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sixty-plus employees. Office space, payroll, turnover, drama. All of it.

At some point, babysitting adults became too hard. I got sick of the call-in excuses, the constant hiring, the whining, the office politics. So we closed the call centers. I walked away thinking I’d never be in that business again.

Ten years later, we not only got back into it,  we now own our own dialer software, texting software, email software, and lead management software. That plan didn’t last. I laugh about it now.

How the lead business started.

When we closed the call centers, I needed to figure out what was next. I assigned someone on my team the job of researching how companies buy and sell leads. She spent the next three months locked in her office doing nothing but that.

What she found opened my eyes to something I hadn’t really understood before: the personal loan space. The sheer volume of people applying for personal loans, filling out forms, looking for help — it was vast. And the businesses on the other side, the ones buying those leads, were hungry for a reliable source.

That was our first real exposure to what a lead was actually worth. Not just as a name and a phone number, but as a transaction with real value on both sides.

We got in. We’ve never left.

What Online Lead Exchange became

Today we have over 27 lead partnerships. We buy leads. We sell leads. We generate leads. We run customer acquisition campaigns. We have a media buying agency called Pink Slushy Media and a website development company focused on local SEO called Good Rep Media. The operation is bigger than I ever expected it to get when I was standing in that empty call center wondering what came next.

Online Lead Exchange is the hub of that whole system. It’s the infrastructure that connects lead generation to lead buyers – cleanly, at volume, with accountability on both sides.

We process up to 800,000 leads a day across the operation. When you’re moving that kind of volume, you need systems that don’t break, partners you can actually trust, and a clear record of where every lead came from and where it went.

Why I built it instead of just brokering

Most people in this space are middlemen. They don’t own the infrastructure, they don’t control the flow, and when something breaks they’re pointing fingers at someone else while the client loses money.

I wanted to own the system. Not just participate in it.

Online Lead Exchange was built so we could control both sides of the transaction – the generation and the distribution. That gives us accountability that most lead companies can’t offer. We know where the lead came from. We know where it went. We can prove it.

That’s not common in this industry. It should be.

Who it’s for

Online Lead Exchange works with companies that buy leads at volume;  lenders, insurance companies, home service providers, and anyone else whose business depends on a consistent, clean flow of interested prospects.

If you need leads, we generate them. If you generate leads and need buyers, we can help with that too. The infrastructure is built for both sides of that equation.

I closed those call centers because I was tired of the overhead. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I wasn’t leaving the lead business. I was just finding a smarter way to be in it.
